Powerful stuff

I would probably drink, eat, swallow, and try anything if it could guarantee me clear skin. I've suffered from spots for as long as I can remember, it dates back as early as year six when my headmaster once picked me out in front of the class I think genuinely worried I'd had an allergic reaction to something. No, it's not a rash, it's just my face.

I drink tonnes of water, I exfoliate, I cleanse, I tone, I moisturise. I'm on the pill. I don't use heavy makeup. I've been to the doctors and apparently my condition isn't strong enough to require prescribed medication. I'm pretty much your model skin-carer and yet... nathing. And they're not even proper spots. They're tiny pimples just everywhere. I get them on my back, on my chest, all over. And it's made worse when I exercise and they flair up. My external shell is somewhat of a failure, and my Dad says I get it from him. And his short legs too. Thanks Dad.

So when I was walking past a health food shop last week I thought, hmm, I'll see if they can help. I bought a pack of Burdock root tea, apparently the best thing for skin blemishes and soreness. As I said, I was prepared to try anything.

It's pretty cheap stuff, and I soon realised why. The stuff tastes FOUL. Like, really gross. It's bad enough it looks like some sort of fungus or wood chipping, but despite it smelling as pleasant as a forest, it also tastes like one. Add a touch of wet dog and gone-off mushrooms and you're about there. If it really helps, I'll brew it up again. But I'll hold my breath. Maybe I can make some sort of intense shots?

If anyone does have any herbal, medical or just unusual remedies they have tried which have worked, please please share the secrets. I don't want to be pimpled past 25, thanks.

To cheer us up from this dreary topic (I know you'd all rather be reading about bronzing lotions and after sun care during weeks like this), I'll leave you in the capable hands of James Brown. You seemed to like a dash of background music last week, and I listened to Craig Charles' funk & soul show the other night on 6Music and it really did cheer me up. I challenge you not to boogie on down to this!

  3. Oh god, that sounds horrendous! Then again, I'm in the exact same boat as you-I've had bad skin since I was 10 and I'd probably jump off a cliff if I though it would calm my spots!
If your skin really bothers you, get back to the doctor and insist on getting something, even just a topical treatment, to try out. I've been on practically every kind of skin medication there is (including one that involved signing a contract and taking a monthly pregnancy test, and then it dehydrated me so much my skin was constantly cracking and bleeding :/ ) and nothing worked permanently, but my sister got a strange roll-on cream from the doctor and her skin has miraculously cleared up! Medication won't work for everybody, butit's got to be worth a try!

  4. Ahh, I'm the same. Since about year 6 too.

I went to the same doctor multiple times and he always told me to use clearasil or some other crap that didnt work. About Dec last year I changed to a different doctor and he prescribed Oxytetracycline twice a day.. Since then I've noticed a difference on my face and chest, still some on my back but its mostly scarring. I don't get any lumps come up anymore on my face!

  5. I've tried everything and the only thing that stopped the spots was roaccutane which was so strong, it had bad side effects. I stopped taking them a little while ago and the spots are coming back :( I bought a Clinique blemish gel and it's amazing. It doesn't stop spots but when I do get them I apply the gel and they go away pretty quickly, I was very impressed. xx

  6. I've had bad skin for as long as I can remember now and I currently have cyctic nodule acne, which is an absolute nightmare! I've tried everything- tablets, creams, going on the pill. I've found that some things have helped, but nothing has ever cleared it completely. I'm finally going to see a dermatologist next month about getting a treatment called Roaccutane.

In the mean time I've been using a Vichy cleansing gel, which I actually really like. I've also used Dermalogica in the past, which was one of the more successful skin care ranges I've used. Murad is also supposed to be good, I've just bought one of their blemish kits in the ASOS sale.

  8. Sounds like you're doing everything right mrs, could the doctor not suggest anything else, or arrange referral to a dermatologist or something? I used to have troublesome skin when I was young & whilst that's cleared up now I still have THE oiliest skin ever & have to be careful what products I use. The tea sounds horrendous, it'd better work if it tastes that bad!! Great tune too :)

  9. Oh, I hope it does work for you! I don't know if it even compares but one of my cheeks always gets spots, so there's constant scarring and redness, which I absolutely hate. I've found that changing the products you use helps - as in, don't use the same spot cream over and over.
The song certainly made me boogie on down!

  11. Have you ever tried pu-erh tea? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pu-erh_tea#Health)
I think the key is to find a balance between diet and hygiene, but I guess you have tried plenty of stuff by now.
Although I must say, since I became a vegetarian my skin is amazing and I don't even wear makeup anymore. Lush soap and vegetarianism did it for me!

  12. ohh I was really hoping that you was going to say that you had found the magic cure. I have suffered with bad skin for years and now the spots have pretty much gone even though I am sitting here with a little outbreak around my nose I now have scarring arghhh. I know you said you have tried the pill but have you been on Dianette it worked really well for me but was too late to stop the scarring. Happy hunting and if you do find a cure be sure to post about it xoxo

  13. Yuck, that stuff sounds gross. When I was about 14, I went along with my younger sister to a Chinese doctor in HK who was going to prescribe her some stuff for her eczema. They decided to give me a free consultation too and they ended up prescribing me some pretty horrific herbal medicine for my spots which was pretty much like sludge...so I can imagine how bad the stuff you boiled up must have been! Though, the joke was that I didn't even have bad acne or anything. I like using good facial scrubs (foaming ones are the best) and oil free moisturisers. I also drink a lot of green tea too and I honestly think that helps my skin a lot because of all the anti-oxidants. Also, if I get any spots, I swear by aloe vera gel which is super cheap at Holland and Barrats!

  14. bleugh, if it tastes anything like dandelion and burdock, i can imagine it's vile!
don't worry, my dad gave me short legs too! x

  15. That's annoying that they won't put you on any meds. The drink sounds foul! Urgh. I've never had massive skin problems apart when I eat really rubbish foods and then all hell breaks loose :P

  16. I feel your pain with the short leg gene, not so much the spots - i have the opposite problem, i have really really dry skin. which is also an effort. but good luck with the tea. and james brown? GOOD CALL!

  17. I know exactly what you mean, I hate my skin. Let me know if you find the solution...

  18. Ditto, my skin didn't start to clear up until I went on Dianette. I wish there was an easy answer to give you, but it really is just trial and error until you find the routine that suits you best. Bit of a bummer, I know...

  19. Annoying, with your skin! I don't know what to tell you because I have not the same type of skin : when I don't put cream my skin is so dry i look like a leprous, and when I put one, even a very good and soft one (like Toleriane), I have awful spots, but dry ones.
So the only advice I have is maybe : puting things on our skin is not very natural and makes us addicted. I guess.
    Bisous.

  21. I use some towels called Eridosis, I buy them in Spain. They're not magical, but they kind of work. I apply a towel after I clean my face before bed.
They don't end the problem but I use them about 3 times a week and I'm very happy with them.
I don't know how to call them in English or where to get them, but this is how they look like http://www.centromujer.es/files/2009/09/img016-440x450.jpg
The main ingredient is Erythromycin, so maybe you can ask for that in a pharmacy.

    Hope it helps! xxx

  22. You look so gorgeous in all of your pictures I've never noticed that you have any spots whatsoever. One of my friends had quite bad skin when she was young and I know it put her self confidence down so much, even though they're all gone now and she is absolutely stunning. I really recommend you do what she did and just stalk and pressure your doctor until he gives you some strong cleanser because that's what she did when they told her her case wasn't serious enough and it's worked magic.
I really hope the tea works though :)

  23. I hope this passes quickly, well if it helps it will be worth the gooeyness right?
I am sorry I don't know any tricks but when i get pimples I put sudocream in them and they dry really fast! Although I didn't notice any marks on your pictures!

  24. I used to have quite bad skin because of my diabetes as it was hard for it to heal when I had spots but I went to the doctor and I have Lymecycline/Tetralysyl which really helps! Neutrogena have an 8 hr spot removal thing which is good too. I can honestly say though I have never though you had bad skin at all!
