Trinkets & Treasures : Charity Swishing Event

Today I broke up my afternoon in the library by going to check out the Trinkets & Treasures Clothes Swap (or Swishing) event being held by Fiona and Cat, two wonderful ladies raising money and awareness in aid of the Young Women's Housing Project. The project is based here in Sheffield, so being a combination of fundraising for a charity on my doorstep and involving clothes and cake - well, it's an invitation I couldn't refuse. If you're interested in what the scheme does, click the link to find out more.

When I arrived they had just started, and were still hanging up more clothes from last minute donations. It worked on a donation / ticket basis whereby you would be allocated tokens to swap for clothes, according to the amount and the quality of the clothes you donated prior to the event. It was wonderfully organised with a colour token system (very innovative and easy to navigate around the multitude of racks). There were all kinds of treasures to be uncovered, from jewellery to dresses to shoes, and no end of vintage attire too.
This is Fiona and Cat (l-r) who organised the whole affair. I know from my own 22nd May Appeal how much time and dedication to the cause it takes to pull off an event successfully, and I hope these two get the total they deserve for all of their hard work!

It was great to talk to them about how the event was going and how they'd organised it. They had a lot of passion for what they were doing and it sounds as if they had so much support from friends, students, and larger stores too. To hear that even M&S had leant rails to hang clothes up on is very impressive - I would imagine it's difficult to approach businesses successfully for donations on a small scale. Definitely tips and tricks to keep in mind for my 22nd May Appeal!
It's such a great idea for a fundraiser. It takes advantage of our habits of hoarding things, and if you participate, you walk away having made a donation to a charity which will make a difference locally, will get rid of some of your clutter you don't use, and you can walk away with a whole load of nearly-new things too!

Did anyone else in the area pop along later in the afternoon? They also had games and a raffle (I learnt I suck at passing maltesers across a table using only a straw and my breath), so if you were lucky enough to win or find some goodies, I'd love to hear about it!

Kudos again to Fi and Cat who put the show together, and no doubt a load of their friends and housemates who donated and added support. If there are any events in the future I'll be sure to be there again! xox
