My "ugly pretty" shoe logic

After a month of deliberation I finally plumped for my next pair to add to the shoedrobe - some creepers! My friends have all been staring at me with a mixture of disgust and awe - it seems they are the Marmite of the shoe world. In the end I decided that if a classic is a classic, there are occasions when you shouldn't mess around with that too much.

Tuk creepers - c/o Spartoo
Vintage spot midi skirt - charity shop
Oversized striped nautical vest - Oasis
Heart-shaped plastic glasses - via eBay

I am a big fan of ugly pretty shoes. I've had this discussion with people before who don't get my logic, but in my eyes, Creepers are the pale and interesting sister of the Doc Martens. They're not quite as popular, and have a bit of an unfair reputation as being loved only by minority cliques. And I love a good underdog shoe story. The pair that's left on the shelf because the beautiful KGs are hogging all of the limelight.

[Even as I'm writing this I can hear myself romanticising the process of shoe shopping, with added unnecessary personification, but I don't care.]

These black ones are versatile enough to be grungey but still quite easy to integrate into my wardrobe. I'm not as cool as these girls who rock them SO EFFORTLESSLY, but I'll wear them in my own way, with my vintage midi with holes down the seams, ridiculously Lana del Ray heart-shaped sunglasses, and be quite happy, thanks.

I am stupidly excited to announce I'll be working with Grazia for an issue out in August on my beloved city of Sheffield! I have always celebrated Steel City and everything in it - and have heralded it as an underdog when it comes to the style stakes. You South Yorkshire lot are a reet trendy bunch, actually. If you are a Sheffield-based fashionista. Get in touch. I need YOU!

  1. I really like these Creepers. I don't think I've ever come across patent leather ones but I like them a lot. I have never plucked up the courage to buy some but I feel it may be about time.

  2. I adore this outfit! The leather creepers look gorgeous (and I love the little back story; I'm equally prone to personifying my clothes!), and that skirt is wonderful too. And congrats and good luck on the Grazia project!

  14. Grazia!! I must say I'm rather excited for you. I watched a programme on Sky Arts about the music from the city a couple of days ago. I think my eventual husband will be in a band from up North. Guitars + Sheffield or Sunderland accent is a winning combination.

I've got some Tuk shoes but I went for white pumps with anchors on. I love creepers but I don't know if I could walk in them of if I would shuffle because they are a little like flatforms with that chunky sole xx
