How to do a messy topknot

How to do a messy topknot

One of the most common questions I get asked is how I do my topknot. I bloody love my bun and it serves to keep my hair off my face, and act as entertainment when some HILARIOUS person squeezes it and makes the noise of a clown horn. You know who you are.

Into a sea of "how to" videos and tutorials, I thought I would add my two pennies worth. I'm not claiming my technique is especially groundbreaking, but if you've got fine hair but LOADS of it like me, this might work for you.

How to do a messy topknot
Step 1. Start with hair that isn't squeaky clean. Day old is perfect! Backcomb the roots of your hair to give volume, concentrating especially on the front if you have a fringe, and the crown.

Step 2. When you're a lioness (see above), gather into a loose ponytail on top of your head. Don't worry if you miss a few strands, this look works best when messy.

Step 3. If your ponytail looks quite tight, pull down on your roots to loosen hair around your head, then backcomb your ponytail a little more to make sure it's stiff and clumpy.

Step 4. Whip you hair back and forth (optional). Grab the body of the ponytail and loosely twist around the bobble to create a bun.

Step 5. Secure the bun with another bobble and pull on the bun until it's as big as you want. This is why backcombing the ponytail was so important - it helps your bun to grow when you tug at it, without falling out. Hairspray is my saving grace, use liberally!

Et voila!

It's not rocket science, but it works for me. Hope that helps!

  1. Love this tutorial - my top knots always end up looking pathetically small so I'll be giving this a go :) xx

  3. This makes me miss my long hair! I always wore it in a top knot or a very classic ballerina bun in the back. That being said, I understand the hassle of having A LOT of hair and trying to get a knot just right. Perhaps that is why I cut it off. Great tutorial, though!
