Race for Life | #Couchto5k

Last Sunday I ran my first ever Race for Life 5k! As someone who was decidedly NOT a runner, this has been a milestone for me that I am ridiculously proud of. Here's my runner story...

I remember the dread of athletics lessons at school, resenting cross country and scoffing that I would much rather be the girl into music, rather than sport, in my class. Now, at the age of 23, I can run for half an hour without really much effort, and to think on Sunday I came within the top 20 (allegedly the top 15, but I'm not sure I believe that) really is stupendously baffling.

I don't even know if that's any good or not - you gym fiends who can spend hours in there without breaking a sweat are waaaay beyond my skills! However, my next step will be the 10k, and my moderate success so far is all down to the Couch to 5k podcasts that the NHS have put together for fellow runner-phobes. If you want to build up your stamina and fancy having a go at running, this is a great place to start!

This is also a good time to show you guys what I've been training in. Fitness fashion isn't exactly my forte just yet, and I definitely wasn't the most glamourous of runners (sweaty hair and red face natch), but that's not what it's about, is it? I've been loving this Gwynedds tie-dye tee that I've been training in, and though it's not gym wear strictly speaking, it's loose and I really like the print on the back, so it suits me perfectly. My New Balance running shoes are the comfiest trainers I have ever owned.

And if all of that wasn't enough, I wanted to do Race for Life to raise as much money as possible for a worthy cause. I am sure the dreaded "c" word has touched every one of your lives, some of you more so, so I think it's our duty as the heathy boned among us to work towards ridding the world of this horrible disease.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated; I would really love to reach £200 by the end of the week (that's just a fiver from five of you!) so if you're feeling generous or touched by the Race for Life movement, please dig deep.

  4. Wow, congratulations!
I started Couch to 5k a couple of months back and thought I was doing well until I got a bad ankle shortly followed by bad knees! Determined to get back into it soon though - I think I just need to find out more about how to properly warm up, if you have any tips let me know! :) x

  5. Love this! Well done you, I have been bitten by the running bug recently so I know exactly how you feel, going from not running since PE lessons to being able to run for half an hour is such an amazing achievement and feels so good! Also I too am developing a trainer obsession, I think it's something to do with realising how comfy running shoes are and not wanting to take them off and swap them for uncomfy day to day shoes! xo

  8. What a fab achievement, this is always something I've wanted to do and i'm hoping to definitely get one done in the next year! I used to love running in school but as i got older and more and more work got in the way, I lost my stamina and now I'm probably pretty rubbish again ha! you should be really proud though because I know how much training and dedication it can take!
