Day trip | Gadget Show 2014
I'm not sure if it's a side effect from living with a techie graphic designer, or perhaps why I like blogging so much, but the fact is, I'm properly geeky for gadgets.
I've reviewed a few pieces of tech over the years on Jazzpad, from a Google Nexus tablet to a variety of manual film cameras like my little Holga (rest in piece). Of course, then, I jumped at the chance to visit the Gadget Show 2014, courtesy of Currys!
The first place I stopped off at was the Philips stand. There were loads of kids crowding around and soon I discovered why - Despicable Me was being projected onto a mock up living room wall. Having a home cinema is the dream, isn't it?
I was really impressed with the picture quality (no jumping or pixelated screen here), and how small they are too. The Philips PicoPix PPX3610 is smaller than a book, and incredibly light, while the other projector on the stall was a veritable home cinema kit. It's incredible how these small gadgets might one day take over from the conventional TV market. I for one would love that, as find those horrendously big TVs a proper eyesore in any room. Any screen you can turn off in favour for a good book, should you want to, gets a thumbs up from me.
There's stuff for everyone at the Gadget Show - they've even got stands about dogs! And yes, I did have a cuddle with resident guide dog Sam. From the genuinely useful (mop heads) to the crazy, bizarre, what-the-hell-would-I-do-with-that-but-I-WANT-it (drones, I'm looking at you), this show inspires and entertains. It really made me wonder what life would be like in a decade or so when, who knows, robots might actually be helping us in our daily lives. Anything is possible with a little imagination, right?
I got chatting to Jeff, one of the marketing guys at Philips, and he kindly let me take a PPX3610 back home with me to trial for a week. The boyfriend is already smitten (I can see Fifa in his eyes) and I'll be testing the projector out properly for a thorough review soon.
Blogger sleepover and cinema night anyone?
